Nara uses manga/anime techniques ion his art. We see a
two-dimensional image of a child with the large, expressive eyes routinely
found in anime and manga. The girl seems to be angry with an adult world that
allows the use of destructive forces. The picture’s message is obvious. Nara is
against nuclear power and weapons, and the girl represents the potential
innocent victims of the use of nuclear energy.
Like, Nara’s picture, the image has a manga/anime look. In
this image, Murakami flattens an image of a mushroom cloud so it appears two-dimensional.
Using “cute culture” he turns the cloud into a skeleton face with a bright pink
background. This doesn’t dilute the message he is trying to get across. The
mushroom cloud represents the bombs dropped by the US at the end of World War
II. After the bombs brought an end to the war, Japan surrendered and in the
process, gave up a lot of its traditional culture and its leadership position
in the world. Murikami believes Japan gave up too much by embracing Western
culture.
